Observations of the Ombudsman for Children’s Office to the Department of Education and Skills’ consultation on the role of religion in the school admissions process

The Department of Education and Skills published a consultation paper on the role of denominational religion in the school admissions process on 24 January 2017. This consultation paper outlined a number of possible approaches for addressing the issue of the role of religion in school’s admissions policies and invited interested parties to provide their observations on this topic.

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office welcomed the opportunity to make a submission on this issue and made recommendations in the areas of the role of religion in school admissions, the right of children to be heard during this consultation process and the removal of religion from the integrated curriculum.
