Classroom Resources
We have developed a range of resources for educators, youth workers and other professionals working with children, so that you can explore issues relating to children’s rights in Ireland with the young people you work with.
Our materials are age-appropriate and can be adapted for children aged 4-17 years. Our resources are available in English and Irish and are easily downloadable.
Making Children’s Rights Real
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ireland’s ratification of the UNCRC, the OCO developed a suite of educational resources for teachers and educators to support children in primary and post-primary schools to learn about their rights under the UNCRC. Making Children’s Rights Real helps children to forge links between their rights and their daily lives, including an important focus on how children can implement action for children’s rights.

Keeper of Rights
The Keeper of Rights is a book written by children, for children to mark the OCO’s 20th Anniversary. The Keeper of Rights was created by children aged 6-12 years from County Sligo in collaboration with Kids’ Own publishing. The book will be available in primary schools around Ireland and there will be an audiobook version also available. Both the book and the audiobook will be available in English and as Gaeilge. The audiobook includes an introduction from Matilda star Alisha Weir.
The Keeper of Rights sees children discuss the Ombudsman for Children’s Office and what we do. They talk about children’s rights and which ones are most important to them. Children also interviewed the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon about his job. The book also includes activities for teachers to carry out with their students alongside the book. The resources were created with teachers.

Act Your Rights
In addition, the OCO collaborated with the Abbey Theatre to develop the online resource Act Your Rights. This resource offers a unique and creative way for educators to begin rights conversations with primary students from 4th-6th class. It includes a series of drama-based activities to make students aware of the UNCRC and to explore how rights are reflected in their own lives and the lives of other children living in Ireland.
