What does this mean?

The UNCRC promises you the right to be protected from work that is physically or mentally harmful.
You also have the right to be protected from doing work that stops you receiving an education.
Did you know?
Child labour is still a big problem around the world today.
There are millions of children who still work in places such as mines, farms, factories and building sites where there is dangerous machinery or harmful chemicals.
Often this happens because the child’s family are living in poverty, they have no access to education, or their parents expect them to work.

Unfortunately, homework does not count as work that harms you!
However, your school should make sure that you don’t have too much homework so that you still have time to play and rest.
Children who are 16 and 17 are not allowed to work more than 40 hours a week and 8 hours a day.
In Ireland, children under 14 cannot work. Children who are 14 or 15 can work but it must be during the school holidays.
Laws in Ireland mean that children under 18 are often paid less money than adults doing the same work.
Do you think this is fair?

Take action!
Every year World Day Against Child Labour is held on 12th June.
Can you think of activities your class could do to raise awareness about child labour?
