What does this mean?
It’s your right to live with your family, or if you can’t, to live with other adults who love and look after you.
Your family have to care for you, teach you what is right and wrong and help you to grow as a person. This is the law in Ireland.
They make important decisions about your life, like where you go to school, where you live, your religion and medical treatments.
It is the Government’s job to help your parent(s) or guardian(s) do their job really well!
It’s your right to be together with your parents if you live in a different country.
You should be able to keep in contact, see each other and be reunited if this is possible.
It’s your right to be cared for by your parents if possible.
If you can’t live with your parents, it’s your right to get special care and help, like foster care or living with another member of your family.
It’s your right to be cared for and protected if you are adopted or in foster care.
Tusla looks after children who are in different forms of foster care in Ireland.
Tusla should make sure you are safe and well in your care placement.
Mohammed’s story
Hi, I’m Mohammed. I’m fifteen and I came to Ireland on my own last year from Somalia. It was not safe for me to stay in my home but my family are still there and I miss them a lot. It’s my right to have them come to Ireland and join me so that they can care for me. While I wait for them, the Irish government have to make sure I am well looked after.
