What does this mean?

The UNCRC says that education is not just about teaching children things like Maths and English.

It is also about helping children to develop their talents and abilities to their fullest potential.

You have a right to receive an education that focuses on lots of different things. You should be able to take part in lots of activities. Schools should create opportunities for children to try things like music, sports, art and drama. These are all really important: they help you develop your personality and your unique identity.

As part of a good education, you should also learn how to respect the environment, human rights, and different cultures. Learning about these things will help you to become a more respectful and responsible person as you grow up.

In many secondary schools in Ireland, fourth year is called Transition Year. In this year you get to develop your talents and abilities by trying out new subjects, learning new skills such as first aid, doing work experience and getting involved in arts and science projects.

Mark’s story

This year I joined a new school and decided to audition for the school play. It’s helped me to make loads of new friends from different classes and I think it has helped me to become way more better at speaking in front of other children and adults. It has made me realise that school is more than just sitting in a classroom doing work– it’s where you can discover new interests and learn new skills.

Niamh’s story

Every week I play wheelchair basketball with a club in my town. Obviously it’s really fun but it’s helped me to become way more confident too. I’ve learned how important it is to work hard, to help your teammates, and to not get too upset if you lose! Playing basketball is such a big part of my life now – I love it!
