What does this mean?

Article 42 of the UNCRC says that governments should make sure that children and adults know about all the rights listed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Adults should explain rights to children in a straightforward way or in their own language.

When you know about your rights, you know what you are entitled to!

How is this right protected in Ireland?

It is the job of the Ombudsman for Children’s Office to protect and promote the rights of all children and young people living in Ireland. The Ombudsman for Children Act 2002 says that we must promote awareness of children’s rights among members of the public – including children!

As well as the OCO, there are lots of other organisations in Ireland where you can learn more about your rights, such as SpunOut, the Children’s Rights Alliance, Citizens Information and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties.

Ellie’s story

Hey, I’m Ellie. My brother and I have been in residential care for 2 years now. My advocate is one of the people who has helped me most in that time. She’s been so supportive. She’s always making sure that I know my rights and that they’re protected, particularly when it comes to me having a say in my care plan. I know she can’t do everything I ask, but she’s got my back and always listens to what if I need more information about something, she’ll always help me out.

Does every child in Ireland enjoy this right?

Not every child in Ireland always knows their rights, especially children in vulnerable situations, like children in care, children who are seeking international protection, or children in hospital. If you’re in this situation, adults should support you to be aware of your rights by taking time to talk through them with you and checking that you have understood everything.
