What does this mean?

It is your right to have healthy food. This right is linked to your rights to stay healthy and alive !

We don’t have free food in Ireland but in some schools have breakfast clubs or get fresh milk delivered to make sure children eat a healthy breakfast. The government has promised to bring in free hot school meals to all primary schools by the year 2030.

They are already ahead of schedule!

The government has to make sure you know how to eat healthily, for example they might put ads on the TV or radio. In school, sometimes teachers do lessons on healthy eating.

If you have to eat certain foods as part of your culture, religion and language, you should be able to get this too.

Food helps you stay alive, be healthy and well.

Fun Fact!

There is a sugar tax which means that food with lots of sugar is more expensive to buy

Sasha’s story

Hi, I’m Sasha and I am a Muslim. In school, I needed to get the free meals but there was a big problem – there was no option there for me that was halal! Halal food is the food I am allowed to eat as part of my religion. I’m not allowed to eat food like pork, for example. So I had to tell the teacher and make sure there was halal food available – it’s my right!
Mabel’s teacher spoke with TUSLA who helped her family, so Mabel’s life at home is better, and she feels safe every day, and this helps her enjoy her other rights.
