Ombudsman for Children’s Office launches new iPad app It’s Your Right for young people

A new iPad app has been launched by the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) to raise awareness among children and young people about their rights.

More than 100 children and young people aged 5 to 18 from counties Dublin, Galway. Meath, Louth, Offaly and Kerry took part in the OCO’s Its Your Right project which includes a website as well as the interactive iPad App.

Spokesperson Nikki Gallagher, said: “The OCO has a responsibility to promote children’s rights among the public including with children directly. We also have a mandate to listen to children and young people, and to highlight issues that matter to them. Its Your Right was a brilliant opportunity to combine all of these things. The children and the young people who took part in this project provide valuable insight into how children’s rights are part of their day to day lives.”

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office created Its Your Right to complement its human rights education programme, where schools visit the Office to learn about children’s rights.  The interactive application and itsyouright.ie feature extensive video, audio and photo elements as well as a full list and information on the rights of the child.

Nikki added: “We were excited to work with the children and young people through a variety of digital media. It was a great opportunity to capture what they had to say about children’s rights in their own words. We hope that project and the free to download app will be a resource for schools, in particular through the CSPE programme.”
