Submission by the Ombudsman for Children’s Office to the Low Pay Commission July 2023

Children under 18 are currently not entitled to the National Minimum Wage. Instead they are entitled to a sub-minimum rate, which amounts to 70% of the National Minimum Wage. The Low Pay Commission is examining the retention or removal of sub-minimum rates of the National Minimum Wage and will make recommendations to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. In July 2023, the OCO made a submission to the Low Pay Commission’s consultation on retaining or removing the sub-minimum rates of the National Minimum Wage. The purpose of this submission is to encourage the Commission to have regard to the rights of children in Ireland in its examination of the sub-minimum rates.
