The Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) is concerned by the Minister for Justice’s proposed amendments to the International Protection Bill 2026. These amendments will change the rules on family reunification for children and families who have been granted refugee status. The OCO is concerned that these provisions will amount to a restriction on the right to family life, jeopardising the safety and wellbeing of migrant and refugee children. In our observations, the OCO makes recommendations as to how the legislation should be amended, to ensure compliance with European and international children’s right standards.
