{"id":2483,"date":"2018-06-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oco.ie\/?p=2483"},"modified":"2026-06-10T13:34:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T12:34:48","slug":"ombudsman-for-children-launches-take-my-hand-young-peoples-experiences-of-mental-health-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oco.ie\/ga\/news\/ombudsman-for-children-launches-take-my-hand-young-peoples-experiences-of-mental-health-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Ombudsman for Children launches \u201cTake My Hand\u201d Young People\u2019s Experiences of Mental Health Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, today launched a report to highlight the views of young people receiving inpatient mental health care.\u00a0 Dr Muldoon, who presented the report to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Future of Mental Health Care, said: \u201cThis is a vulnerable group of children whose views on mental health services have not been heard in this way before, and they have important insights to share.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oco.ie\/MentalHealthReport_2018.pdf\">\u201cTake My Hand\u201d<\/a>, highlights young people\u2019s experiences of, and perspectives on mental health services, based on their own journeys from community-based primary healthcare services through to inpatient treatment. The report gives a rare insight into the experiences of 25 young people aged 14-17 in five of Ireland\u2019s six inpatient units for children and young people. The young people spoke about what has helped them in this journey, what they found challenging and what changes they feel are needed to improve mental health supports and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is essential to put children at the centre of mental health services.
