Ombudsman for Children and NI Commissioner for Children and Young\u00a0People come together to warn of the potential impact of Brexit on Children,\u00a0young people from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Ombudsman for Children and the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young\u00a0People will together host a meeting of children and young people from North and South on\u00a0the impact of Brexit. It\u2019s Our Brexit Too, will take place in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry on\u00a0Friday 10th November.<\/p>\n

This meeting comes as the EU Network of Children\u2019s Ombudspersons (ENOC) warn of the\u00a0potential impact of Brexit on children and young people from both sides of the border.\u00a0Children\u2019s Commissioners and Ombudspersons in 23 European countries, have in a recent\u00a0letter, highlighted the fragility of the peace process in Northern Ireland and called for\u00a0decisions about Brexit to be formally assessed so there is no regression of children\u2019s rights in\u00a0Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. They also call for the voices and experiences of\u00a0children and young people who \u2018may feel powerless in the face of a process that will\u00a0 shape\u00a0their futures\u2019 to be taken into account.<\/p>\n

Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, speaking ahead of the It\u2019s Our Brexit Too event said:<\/p>\n

\u201cTravelling around the country, and meeting with thousands of young people it became\u00a0clear that children and young people north and south of the border have had little\u00a0opportunity to voice their views on the potential impact of Brexit on their lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren and young people have a right to be heard and to have their views\u00a0considered in decisions affecting them. As Brexit will, without a doubt affect them, we\u00a0have brought together a cross-border group of young people who, have taken the lead\u00a0in organising this event and inviting some key officials.<\/p>\n

Koulla Yiasouma, Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, said,<\/p>\n

\u201cMy counterparts across Europe and I recently raised concerns about the potential impact of\u00a0Brexit on children. For example, we call for systems to be put in place as a matter of urgency\u00a0to make sure children are fully protected from child trafficking, child abduction and child\u00a0sexual exploitation. Detailed consideration must also be given to how the European Arrest\u00a0Warrant and other cross border child protection measures are going to function.<\/p>\n

Koulla continued, \u201cChildren from the UK living in other EU Countries, and Children from other\u00a0EU countries living in the UK are uncertain about their status and residency rights, this has a\u00a0profound and unsettling impact on their lives. Reaching an agreement on this issue must be\u00a0an absolute priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung people have raised many valid concerns, like these, with me over the past few months\u00a0but until today, their voices and experiences have been absent in the wider Brexit discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthew, a member of the Youth Steering Group said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe there are a lot of issues that chief Brexit negotiators haven\u2019t even thought of in\u00a0relation to children\u2019s lives. I hope the report, which we will produce from this event, will make\u00a0sure our voices, as the young people who will be most affected by Brexit, will be heard and\u00a0will feed into the negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Around 100 young people across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland explored issues\u00a0and scenarios with decision makers. A report will be presented to local, national and EU\u00a0decision makers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
