What type of school complaints can we examine?

The complaint must relate to:

an administrative action of the school, staff or Board of Management , by administrative action we mean whether a schools’ policies have been followed correctly or if those policies are fair

a negative or adverse effect that this action has had on a child

All schools should have policies in place to deal with issues as they arise in the normal day to day running of a school. These should be provided or made available to parents of children attending.

Examples of complaints which we can not examine.

Bullying allegations but we can look at how the school responded to the incident or any complaint made because of it.

The professional conduct or competence of a teacher or Principal. Complaints that are mainly about professional conduct or competence should be dealt with through the employment disciplinary process, the Teaching Council or through the DES Inspectorate.

Decisions on enrolment, suspension or expulsion.

Actions which primarily affect adults.
