Every single person regardless of their age has human rights. Children and young people have special rights because being young sometimes makes them more vulnerable. This means that they must be treated properly and respected by everyone but it also means that children and young people have to respect other people's rights too.
Some examples of the kind of rights that children and young people have are the right to be listened to, the right to an education and the right to be looked after if they get sick.
Sometimes children and young people’s rights are not respected. This does not mean that their rights are taken away. It just means that their rights have been ignored. People in charge in Ireland must make sure that this does not happen.
When you have rights, you also have responsibilities. For example, children and young people have the right to education and so the responsiblity is going to school.
All children and young people in the world have the same rights, and these rights are listed in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
