The Big Debate

International human rights monitoring

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office is actively engaged with international human rights monitoring mechanisms at both United Nations and Council of Europe level. Of particular importance in this respect is the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the panel of independent experts that periodically monitors Ireland’s compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The OCO has submitted its advice to the UN Committee on a number of occasions.

In addition, the OCO has submitted its views to the UN Human Rights Council as part of the Council’s universal periodic review (UPR) process.

Report to the UN Committee on Ireland's First Report under the Optional Protocol - October 2007
Report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on the occasion of the examination of Ireland's Second Report to the Committee - April 2006
Submission for the 12th Session of the Working Group on Universal Periodic Review - March 2011
